For example, if you open the corresponding section on the official AeroCool website, now it is generally difficult to find fans without backlighting, and special emphasis is placed on sets of three fans with backlight control hubs. Apparently, such sets are popular, so the company has seven of them at once..

However, in today’s article, we are not talking about sets of AeroCool fans, but about individual models: a relatively simple 120mm Eclipse 12 ARGB and a very unusual 140mm version of the Edge 14, featuring solid backlighting in the frame, rather than in the impeller..

This model is manufactured in China and comes with a two-year warranty. The cost of the AeroCool Eclipse 12 ARGB is comparatively low — only 350 rubles apiece. AeroCool Eclipse 12 ARGB are 120mm fans with a round black frame with special «ears» for mounting, and an equally black seven-bladed impeller mounted on a stator with four curved struts.

Fan dimensions are standard – 120 × 120 × 25 mm and weighs 171 grams. Due to the backlight built into the frame, its thickness is relatively large, which is especially noticeable at the exit of the air flow, where it reaches 9 mm. As a result, the impeller itself is only 100mm in diameter, while other 120mm fans are fitted with 111-113mm impellers. Here, we note a large, three-millimeter gap between the ends of the blades and the frame, which may indicate a low level of static pressure of the fan. But this — in theory, but how it is in practice, we will describe below.

In terms of the blades, it is also impossible to distinguish any features here, apart from the aggressive and pointed leading edge with a corner protruding forward..

According to the developers, such blades are capable of developing higher static pressure and greater air flow, which, apparently, should compensate for the reduced diameter of the impeller. And according to the characteristics of the fan, it is clear that the air flow and pressure of this model are quite modest. So, at a constant rotation speed of 1200 rpm (there is no PWM adjustment here) AeroCool Eclipse 12 ARGB is capable of injecting an air flow of 32.1 CFM and developing a static pressure of 1.27 mm H 2 O. For comparison, let us add that, for example , for a classic model like the AeroCool Dark Force 12cm at the same speed — 1200 rpm — declared airflow at 41.4 CFM and static pressure must be at least 1.32 mm H 2 O.

But in terms of the declared noise level, the AeroCool Eclipse 12 ARGB is able to outperform other fan models. — it should be no more than 19.8 dBA. For 1200 rpm this is a very low value, but we will definitely take measurements according to our methodology and see how it corresponds to reality. The low noise level is also facilitated by the hydrodynamic bearing of the fan, hidden under the foil sticker on the stator with a diameter of 40 mm. Its standard service life – 60,000 hours, or more than 6 years of continuous operation.

As for the electrical component, in this regard, the AeroCool Eclipse 12 ARGB cannot be classified as an economical model. With the backlight on, the fan should consume 4.56 watts, but according to our measurements, it turned out to be no more than 3 watts. The starting voltage is 5V and the length of the two-wire cable is 595mm.

Rubber dampers are built into the corners of the fan’s plastic frame, through which it contacts computer cases, processor coolers or radiators of liquid cooling systems.

Thanks to them, the transmission of vibrations to the body is reduced and the noise level is reduced..

The AeroCool Edge 14 is manufactured in China and comes with a 2 year warranty. However, its cost is almost three times higher than that of the Eclipse 12 ARGB., — 970 rubles. The fans themselves are 140 × 140 × 25 mm, but looks like regular 120 mm models, since the outer square frame is LED, and the fan itself with the impeller is, as it were, inserted into it.

And this is where the problem really arises, which AeroCool draws attention to on the packaging of the fans. Look at its dimensions.

That is, the holes for the fan mounts are the same as for 120-mm models, but the space for their installation will be the same as for 140-mm versions of fans with a classic frame. Let’s add that this model weighs 230 grams.

The fan is equipped with a 7-blade impeller with a diameter of 114 mm. The blades themselves here are the same shape as those of the Eclipse 12 ARGB, only slightly larger, but the gap between the ends of the impeller blades and the frame is twice as large — 6-7 mm.

The main specifications of the AeroCool Edge 14 are almost the same as the 120mm model: 1200 RPM RPM, 35.4 CFM airflow, 1.35mm H 2 O static pressure and 19.7 dBA noise level.

The stator diameter is slightly larger here and is equal to 41 mm. Higher and fan power consumption – 5.04 V @ 0.42 A (although the stator indicates a different amperage).

Testing.

To measure the noise level of the fans, we used a wooden frame with silicone studs for soft suspension. «turntables», but from hardware – proprietary speed controller with precision ±10 rpm and electronic sound level meter «OCTAVA-110A» (accuracy class 1, 22-139 dBA). To measure the air flow rate, we used a Proskit MT-4005 digital anemometer with an accuracy ±3% ft / s.

To assess the airflow and noise level of the 120mm AeroCool Eclipse 12 ARGB fan, we included Arctic Bionix P120 fans, be quiet! Pure Wings 2 (BL046) and Noctua NF-S12B redux-1200 RPM. In turn, we compared the 140mm AeroCool Edge 14 model with be quiet! Fans. Silent Wings 3 (BL071), Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition and Noctua NF-A15 HS-PWM. Since the speed of both AeroCool fans is not monitored or regulated, they were tested at their nominal 1200 rpm, and we quite accurately brought the speed of all other test participants to this level with an error of no more than ±10 rpm The only exception was the Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition, which can only operate at 1100 rpm (1115 rpm according to monitoring data), so it is marked with an asterisk in the diagrams.

First, let’s compare the noise level of the fans.

In terms of noise level, both models of AeroCool fans could not take the lead, although we had hope: due to the reduced impellers of both models, they should be quiet. Anyway, the Eclipse 12 ARGB is slightly quieter than the expensive Austrian Noctua NF-S12B redux-1200 RPM and lost only 1.7 dBA to the German be quiet! Pure Wings 2. Only Arctic Bionix P120 leads the way by a wide margin — and this is the only model that runs comfortably or even quietly at 1200 rpm. At the same time, we note that not a single 140-mm fan of the 1200 rpm test can be called comfortable in terms of noise level, and there is no question of silence. Of the advantages of AeroCool Edge 14, we single out the silent operation of the bearing with an electric motor and a precisely balanced impeller..

Now let’s look at the results of measurements of the air flow of the fans..

In terms of the volume of the pumped air flow, both AeroCool fans took the third place out of four in their groups. The quietest Arctic Bionix P120 and be quiet! Silent Wings 3 results are worse. In other words, the Eclipse 12 ARGB and Edge 14 performed rather modestly in terms of the combination of noise and airflow tests. However, these fans were not designed to take the lead in performance. — the developers obviously put design and accessibility at the forefront.

AeroCool Eclipse 12 ARGB and Edge 14 — a typical example of modern trends in the development of fans. It should also be borne in mind that these fans do not have speed monitoring and the ability to adjust the speed using PWM. The inexpensive Eclipse 12 ARGB is easy to forgive all of these disadvantages. Three times more expensive Edge 14 – is already more complicated, but if design is more important to you, then you will hardly find a more expressive fan on the market.
